Vocabulary to Learn







Hiking Vocabulary
1. insect repellent- something to keep insects away from people
2. canyon - a river cuts a deep path through rocks.
3. gorge - same as canyon
4. hydrate - drink enough water for you body to be healthy.
5. exhaustion - a state of being very tired (verb - to exhaust, to be exhausted)
6. heat exhaustion - very ill from dehydration
7. itchy- an uncomfortable feeling that you want to scratch.
8. scratch - rub your skin hard with fingernails or an object.
9. sunburn - redness and pain on the skin from too much sun exposure.
10. prevent - to stop something from happening.



Eastman House Vocabulary
1. mansion - large expensive house
2. invent - to create or design something new
3. philanthropy - doing good for others by giving money
4. patent - get the right to make, use or sell an invention
5. tycoon - wealthy powerful person in business or industry
6. purchase - get something by paying for it
7. prosperous - financially successful, rich, wealthy
8. genius - a person who is exceptionally intelligent or creative
9. modest - unassuming, moderate, avoids attention
10. suicide - intentionally killing yourself
11. disabled - having a condition that limits the senses, movement, or activity
12. photographic plate - flat sheet of metal or glass on which a photographic image is made
13. emulsion - a light sensitive coating on photograph or movie film


Pioneer Vocabulary
1. gristmill- a place where grain is ground to make meal, or flour.
2. settler- a person who settles in an area where there are no people.
3. congregation- a group of people gathered together.
4. pioneer- A person who gets to a place first.
5. bring up the rear- last person in line
6. slave- a person who is bought and owned by a master
7. container- an object that can be used to hold or transport something.
8. deliver- bring to this nation
9. simmer- keep just below boiling, while cooking.
10. kettle- a metal container usually with a handle, used for cooking.
11. shoot- point a weapon at a target and release ammunition.
12. chop- cut with an axe.
13. axe- sharp heavy metal tool.
14. blacksmith- a worker who makes tools and equipment out of metal.
15. horseshoe- a piece of metal nailed to the horse’s hoof for protection.
16. oxen-  large cow-like animals used to pull wagons and plow land. Singular=ox.
17. pharmacy- a store where medicines are prepared and sold.
18. wagon- a 4-wheeled vehicle used to move things, pulled by oxen.
19. cooper- a person who makes wooden containers.
20. potter- a person who makes containers of clay.
21. soldier- a person who serves in an army.
22. schoolhouse- one-room school for all grades.
23. farm- a place where crops are grown and animals are raised.
24. yoke- wooden frame on the neck and shoulders, used for carrying 2 buckets.
25. dip pen- an instrument for writing with ink on paper.



Blog vocabulary:
1. blog - web+log = weblog.    Online journal.

2. blog title -  Name of your blog

3. post (noun) - Daily writing (paragraph)  on your blog.
    Example: Your first post will be telling us about you.

4. to post (verb)-  Put your writing on your blog.
    Example: You will post on Tuesday,Wednesday, and Friday of week one.       

5. post title - Name of your daily writing
    Example: All About Me,  What I Learned Today

6. edit - to change, to improve your writing
              Find the EDIT icon at the end of each post.

7. banner -  long skinny picture under blog title          

8. gadget - small item or thing on the side of your blog.(example: photo, list, interesting fact, about me)

9. background - picture behind your blog

10. poll - you ask an interesting question, others answer
              one kind of gadget

Kayak vocabulary:



1. Kayak- a light weight canoe with a covered top.

2. Cockpit- a hole in the top of the kayak; where you sit.

3. Coaming- the rim or edge of the cockpit.

4. Deck- the top of the kayak.

5. Hull- the bottom of the kayak.

6. Bow- the front of the kayak

7. Stern- the back of the kayak

8. Seat- the place you sit

9. Blade- the part of the paddle that goes in the water

10. Shaft- the part of the paddle that you hold
